Best Sets with David Robinson
This is Best Sets: A deep dive with some of your favorite people on their favorite concerts.
David Robinson is a native Chicagoan and founder of the Mosh app, a social media platform for concertgoers to track their favorite shows and discover live music with friends. After ten years in the professional world, David decided to turn his side project into something more and is excited to bring together fellow concertgoers to share their love for live music. Mosh app launched in April on both the Apple App store and the Google Play store.
Three things David wants you to know about him and life in general: 1) He loves trying new things almost to a fault. 2) He’s never lived in a suburb, always lived in the city of Chicago with a 606 zip code. 3) He went to 75 concerts in one year, which was the catalyst of starting Mosh.
Join the Mosh app community to share your live music diary, but until then, get put onto some new music...
1) What is the best set of live music you’ve ever seen? One show that comes to mind is Vampire Weekend at Northerly Island for their Father of the Bride tour back in 2019. We got pit tickets and hearing the new album plus all their classics was so memorable. I’ve probably listened to Contra 100 times and of course A-punk is such an ear worm.
2) Who is doing live music better than anyone right now? So I saw the band TWEN at Lincoln Hall and they just had so much energy. The singer is amazing. I have just been put onto their music in the last couple months, but they deserve more notoriety. I hope people check them out. Tons of energy and have a good message..
3) What is your favorite venue to see live music in? The outdoors at Salt Shed feels like a small and intimate enough stage for the artists. The vibes are always good there and the sunset provides a good backdrop.
4) Who do you think should have more eyes on them but don’t? I also listen to a lot of electronic music, and there’s an artist in the UK named MPH. I like him a lot. I think he’ll be at one of the festivals In Chicago. Very UK garage type of electronic music. If you like Sammy Virji or some of the stuff that Fred Again did, he’s a good person to listen to.
5) Who would you want to see live that you haven’t seen yet? Tame Impala. I’ve never been in the city when they’re here. They’re definitely my top.
6) Is there a dream festival you’d like to attend one day? Glastonbury. Isn’t that everybody’s? If not that then Primavera Sound. They always have a rocking lineup and it’s a good time of year too. I’ve been to most of the major US based ones so I want to travel to more.
7) What’s the best piece of concert merchandise that you own? One of the first ever sets I saw at Lollapalooza was The Cool Kids. They just did an anniversary show at Empty Bottle so I stayed after and got one of their first albums autographed by both of them. It was premium millennial nostalgia.
8) Have you ever had an experience with someone you’re a stan of? I honestly haven’t. Mac Miller on the Blue Slide Park tour in the balcony of the House of Blues in Chicago he waived to us and that’s probably the closest I’ve ever come to an interaction.
9) What was your first concert? That Mac Miller show at House of Blues is the first one I remember. I was a huge Mac Miller fan. Blue Slide Park tour, my 18th birthday. I was like “okay, I get it. I love seeing my favorite artists in small venues”. That’s probably what set off my interest in live music.
10) F***, Marry, Kill: the pit, the seated balcony, side stage? I’ve never actually been side stage so let’s say f*** side stage. Marry the pit. Kill the seated balcony. I’ve just never been a sit down at concert fan. That’s probably why I don’t go to as many large venue shows..
